When the cosmetics companies start putting out their makeup sets it always makes me feel like Christmas is around the corner. Ever since I was a teenager, my mother would gift me a makeup set from Estee Lauder or Elizabeth Arden (her favorite brands) for Christmas. It’s the way I was able to build up my makeup collection. It’s also the reason why I’m so miserly when it comes to buying makeup. Why buy a one color eyeshadow pan for $16 when I can have a whole palette of colors if I just wait for a makeup set?
Once I started working for Lancôme, I realized why. Most companies use these makeup sets as a bait to sell their other, often pricier, items. Some companies just repackage their items into these makeup sets so you end up getting a sample size. You get hooked because the items are amazing.
Unfortunately, other companies will cheap out on these makeup sets by using different formulations and you end up being disappointed in the makeup. In the larger sets you’ll hopefully find a few items that you’ll love, making the purchase worthwhile.
When I got an email from the Krazy Coupon Lady saying that Ulta had two house branded makeup sets for $20, I knew I had to get them. I fell in love with the packaging without even seeing the makeup. One of the sets, Pretty and Polished, is in a beautiful plum colored box and I LOVE boxes. I’m sure some of you feel the same. The other set, Brilliantly Beautiful, is in a nice sized cosmetic travel case.
This is more of an unboxing than a review. I haven’t been able to use the makeup sets enough to do a good review since I only bought them yesterday. I did use some of the eyeshadow (purple hued), shimmer bronzer, blush and lip liner and I liked them. The one item I tried that I didn’t like was the eyeliner. I found that it was too hard to apply and was not lining my eyes even after multiple tries.
